Run For Your Life

6:38am on a Friday. A phone alarm is ringing in my ear. My feet hit the floor. Twenty minutes later, I am stretching outside Nike's Flatiron store ready for the run. Other runners are present, we are about to set foot in New York City.

Running with Nike has been a pivotal part of training. We stand ready to be led by pacers, expert runners who match our speed. Their presence gives us an air of confidence, yet they are just as human as you and me.

Running is both physical and mental, and much easier than you think. At first, my body would scream. "Stop. Stop. STOP!!" Breaking through this heart-pounding threshold my body cheers, "Go! Go!!"

Recording a total 529 miles last year inspires me to move further. This fall, I have launched a campaign to raise $2,620 for the New York City Marathon. All proceeds are directed to Braking AIDS through Housing Works. 2 reasons to get started:

#1 Health

Running improves your mental health. It allows you to explore unique paths and discover locations you've never seen. You choose the speed, length and time of your run. Then it's off to the races.

#2 Happiness

There are too many reasons to move. Whether you have an active mindset, want to lose weight or need some air. No matter your cause, the city is best seen on foot. Got sneakers? Good to go.

Braking AIDS through Housing Works

Housing Works is a healing community of people living with and affected by HIV/AIDS. Our mission is to end the dual crises of homelessness and AIDS through relentless advocacy, the provision of lifesaving services, and entrepreneurial businesses that sustain our efforts. No matter what your ability or skill level, your participation will make a difference in the lives of men, women, and families living with HIV/AIDS.

Getting up to speed, here are three ways to support the marathoners.

On Your Mark…

Run, walk, or spectate the NYC Marathon on November 1st. There will also be more than 130 bands performing along the route, which is more musical entertainment than any race in the world.

Get Set…

Support local runners through active action. You can rent my ride for charity. All proceeds are directed to Braking AIDS through Housing Works.
